How self-organized criticality works: A unified mean-field picture

چکیده
We present a unified dynamical mean-field theory, based on the single site approximation to the masterequation, for stochastic self-organized critical models. In particular, we analyze in detail the properties of sandpile and forest-fire ~FF! models. In analogy with other nonequilibrium critical phenomena, we identify an order parameter with the density of ‘‘active’’ sites, and control parameters with the driving rates. Depending on the values of the control parameters, the system is shown to reach a subcritical ~absorbing! or supercritical ~active! stationary state. Criticality is analyzed in terms of the singularities of the zero-field susceptibility. In the limit of vanishing control parameters, the stationary state displays scaling characteristics of self-organized criticality ~SOC!. We show that this limit corresponds to the breakdown of space-time locality in the dynamical rules of the models. We define a complete set of critical exponents, describing the scaling of order parameter, response functions, susceptibility and correlation length in the subcritical and supercritical states. In the subcritical state, the response of the system to small perturbations takes place in avalanches. We analyze their scaling behavior in relation with branching processes. In sandpile models, because of conservation laws, a critical exponents subset displays mean-field values (n5 1 2 and g51) in any dimensions. We treat bulk and boundary dissipation and introduce a critical exponent relating dissipation and finite size effects. We present numerical simulations that confirm our results. In the case of the forest-fire model, our approach can distinguish between different regimes ~SOC-FF and deterministic FF! studied in the literature, and determine the full spectrum of critical exponents. @S1063-651X~98!09805-5#

The existence of true scale-invariance in slowly driven models of selforganized criticality without a conservation law, as forest-fires or earthquake automata, is scrutinized in this paper. By using three different levels of description (i) a simple mean field, (ii) a more detailed mean-field description in terms of a (self-organized) branching processes, and (iii) a full stochastic representat...
متن کاملHigher Order and boundary Scaling Fields in the Abelian Sandpile Model
The Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM) is a paradigm of self-organized criticality (SOC) which is related to c = −2 conformal field theory. The conformal fields corresponding to some height clusters have been suggested before. Here we derive the first corrections to such fields, in a field theoretical approach, when the lattice parameter is non-vanishing and consider them in the presence of a boundar...
متن کاملIsing model with a boundary magnetic field - an example of a boundary flow
In [3] a nonperturbative proof of the g-theorem of Affleck and Ludwig was put forward. In this paper we illustrate how the proof of [3] works on the example of the 2D Ising model at criticality perturbed by a boundary magnetic field. For this model we present explicit computations of all the quantities entering the proof including various contact terms. A free massless boson with a boundary mas...
متن کاملSelf-organized criticality in nonconservative mean-field sandpiles
A mean-field sandpile model that exhibits self-organized criticality (SOC) despite violation of the grain-transfer conservation law during avalanches is proposed. The sandpile consists of N agents and possesses background activity with intensity η ∈ [0, 1]. Background activity is characterized by transitions between two stable agent states. Analysis employing theories of branching processes and...

The sun provides an explosive, heavenly example of self-organized criticality. Sudden bursts of intense radiation emanate from rapid rearrangements of the magnetic field network in the corona. Avalanches are triggered by loops of flux that reconnect or snap into lower energy configurations when they are overly stressed. Our recent analysis of observational data reveals that the loops (links) an...
